Hurricane Hill

Almost forgot to add this! We stopped for a quick trip up Hurricane Hill. Total round trip is 3 miles so the site says. We never got to the top. It was too foggy and cloudy. Since no view and we wanted to get to our cabin in Forks as it was getting late we decided to turn around. But it was so beautiful up there, we wanted to share our snaps! We hope to return on a nicer day as I am sure the views would be breathtaking as we were amazed by what we could see! Enjoy! Oh, you'll have to pay $15 to get up here.......but it's worth it. Easy drive...just put it in low on the way down and watch for other drivers. Some may be too busy looking at deer and other wildlife to watch where they are driving!

Second Beach

Now this is an amazing beach! We got there around low tide...making it look like an endless and the widest beach we have ever seen. It went on forever! Should you get there for a sunny day, there is no better place on earth. It's a quick .7 miles down. You will have to do a lot of log hopping to get to the beach as the is a huge pile of 'driftwood' trees at the mouth of the beach. We logged in a total of 4 miles here from start to finish most of it obviously on the beach itself. We went from end to end. Loads of tide pools and sea stacks to keep you busy. We had a nice lunch in a quiet corner. As it was lunch time, there were more people here, but being such a big beach you weren't tripping on one another. More campers here and the occasional dog...although dogs are not allowed on third or second beach. They were leashed and caused no problems.

Third Beach

Day 2 at the Olympic Coast was spent at first at Third Beach. Very well marked, good parking and our arrival at 9:15 AM there were loads of cars in the parking lot. We expected to find it very busy, but just a few campers that were spending the weekend down on the beach. Great campsite! The hike down is quite easy on the well maintained trail. Bathrooms at the trail head. About 1.4 miles down to the beach. Got there and the clouds burnt off about an hour later. We just walked and lazed about for a few hours taking snaps and enjoying the sun before we headed to Second Beach.

Rialto Beach

We took ourselves out to the Olympic Coast here in Washington to hike the beaches. Rialto beach was our first stop on our first night. Took a bottle of wine and watched the sunset. Up the beach is the way to hole in the wall should you wish....but we were tired from our long trip up with stops along the way at Olympic Cellar Winery and Hurricane Hill. Both are worth the stop! Anyway! Rialto is a great black rock beach and amazing place to watch the sunset. Sea stacks galore! It's a must see if you are in the area. Plenty of parking. We walked far down to get away from a small crowd that was made by the Twilighters tweaking out as this is Forks after all.

Otter Falls and Big Creek Falls

July 4th was spent on the trail by the three Triple H'ers--along with our faithful trail dogs Bella and Pito. We have been wanting to see otter falls and big creek since we saw it last year on the WTA site. It's long --10 miles round trip--but no real elevation gain so it was really just a nice long walk along the Taylor river and then deeper past creeks to the falls. Very simple to find which is a nice change for us! It is on the way to mail box...our dream hike this summer. Everyone talks about how the road out there is filled with potholes and it took them an hour to hour and a half to meet the trail head....we found it not all that bad. I do have a truck that is prepared for off road conditions, but still it took us 40 minutes to do the 12 miles....not a stunning speed, but I was prepared for a horrible road that was almost impassable. Yes, leaving there were the people going 40+MPH...on the average I went 30-35 with spots slowing down to 10-15 to avoid the potholes. We went very early in the morning so I could have the entire road to avoid all the potholes. I really hope they don't pave this road as they have been talking. Just a nice grating is all is really needs.

Once you hit the trail, it will fork about .35-.4 miles in, take the right/straighter path. Left goes to Rooster mountain. After that it's pretty easy. At the next fork follow the sign to Snoqualmie Lake. Ran into loads of people coming and/or going for an overnight hike. I read a review that a nice guy put up a sign to Otter Falls, but all we found was the carving into the sign of the tree and a pile of rocks on the left...someone must have taken the sign...how rude. The left to the falls is around 4.5 miles. The only real elevation is here going up the the falls. We were all surprised how how HUGE the falls were. The pictures really do not do it's size justice and we were please we hiked out to see it. After that it's just a short .5 miles to Big Creek Falls. We had lunch here, basked in the sun for an hour and turned around. The trail was a little muddy and we had to rock hop across a few creeks but nothing seriously difficult. Very pretty trail and should we need something nice and easy, we shall return.
